Make your own strong, hardcover notebooks in half an hour!

Hi guys, I’m back with a new tutorial. This week I’m showing how to make a hardcover notebook/journal. I’ve been making them for a while now, and I found that this is the easiest and fastest technique that still looks good and is strong enough.

What you’ll need:

  • A4 paper
  • A needle and string
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Cardboard
  • Glue

Step 1: Divide your paper into groups of 6 sheets and fold double

You need at least 4 groups. I chose to make 5 groups, because that makes a nice thickness. FullSizeRender-78

Step 2: Mark the places for the holes

Draw dots on the spine of each group where the holes will come. The dots should be 3 cm from the outside and 3 cm apart, as shown in the picture.

Step 3: Poke through all the marks with a needle

This will make it easier to find the right place later on. Make sure to go through all the sheets, though!

Step 4: The Binding

Make a knot in your string and pull it through the spine of one of the groups. Flip the paper and pull it back out through the other hole. Then flip the paper again.

Now, what you’re going to do is take the 2nd group of paper and pull the needle through the most outside hole. Again, flip open the 2nd group and go back through the other hole  and this is what you’ll have:

Pull the string tight and lay the groups on top of each other like this:

Now, you put the needle into the next group and so on:

When you’re finished, make a knot and this is what you’ll have:

Step 5: Repeat step 4 for the other side

Do the exact same but for the other side. This is what you’ll have.

Step 6: Cut the cardboard and stick it to the upper and lower pages.

Cut two pieces of cardboard the size of half an A4 paper and stick them to the top and bottom page with glue.

Step 7: Use scrapbook paper to make the spine

Make sure to use strong paper, or the spine might fall apart (I know this from personal experience…)

Step 8: use more paper to decorate the out- and inside

Stick paper to the covers of your book and to inside of the first and last two pages.

And that’s it! This is how the inside pages will look:

This book makes a really nice notebook or journal. I think I’m going to use mine as an art journal.
